Kate Talbot, partner in a small town detective agency is blinded by the psychopath who kills her husband and unborn child. Filled with guilt she retreats into a world of computers where life and death are played out on the screen, creating a form of immortality. When her partner urges her to come out of retirement to investigate a series of accidents at a school for disabled children, she reluctantly agrees. She soon realizes that the deaths aren't accidents, but a part of a sinister plot, so diabolical that it can't be imagined. Her investigation takes her through the attics of the school, to the state mental hospital, to a country funeral and along a slippery ledge four stories above the ground. Follow her from the safety of your chair to the surprising conclusion.

Kate Talbot has every reason to feel depressed and sorry for herself. In one terrible night, she lost her husband, her unborn child, and her eyesight and it would never have happened if she had followed her mother's advice and become a music teacher instead of a partner in a small town detective agency. When her erstwhile partner tells her that he suspects the nearby private school for the blind and multi-disabled children is not what it seems, she reluctantly agrees to apply for the now-vacant position of music teacher. What follows is a hair-raising tale of suspense and good old-fashioned sleuthing.
I hope we get to see more of Kate Talbot and read of her adventures as she emerges from her own darkness. Her independence and mobility skills should be an inspiration to any visually impaired person, and a reason for the rest of us to appreciate the gifts we have.

The book was well written, with likeable (and dislikeable) characters. The spelling and grammar were both flawless. My only serious complaint with the book was with the formatting. Although I'm sure it was a glitch in the conversion process from text to ebook format, there were countless instances of stray periods--usually next to another punctuation mark. Double periods and period-comma combinations were annoying. One sentence started with a period question mark.
On a personal note, I very much appreciated Ms Campbell's glowing praise for the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Virginia. She makes a very valid point that expensive private schools are not necessarily better than public schools, especially in this story.

Who Will Hear Them Cry edition by Phyllis StatonCampbell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

WHO WILL HEAR THEM CRY is not a typical mystery. While there are some elements of a typical mystery, unexpected deaths, sinister people pretending to be good, and an old house with secret passages, there is more to this mystery than meets the eye. Beneath the outward scenery and characters, there is a deeper, more complex plot. The main character, Kate Talbot, is a blind detective. But she is not the super hero that you see on television. She is not using strange technology or weird devices to solve this case. Instead, she is a real person, with flaws and brokenness, dealing with her sight loss as best she can, and using her other senses and her sharp mind to get to the bottom of what is going on. She emerges from her brokenness, and finds that not only can she cope with her own blindness very well, but she can help the children in her care to do the same and to be triumphant in the face of terror. This book is also a great example of local writing with a true Virginia flavor. Phyllis Campbell writes of people and places that have been familiar to her all her life. She shares them with us as if she were introducing old friends and invites us to enter the world of Kate and the children. She manages to keep us in suspense till almost the very end and then surprises us with how things turn out. This is a book to read in one sitting, with a hot cup of tea and your favorite cat close at hand.
"Oh, God, why didn't you let me die? If I had done the sensible thing, if I had taught music, or sold dresses, or waited on tables, anything, except be a detective, it wouldn't have happened. If I hadn't ignored that call!"

Kate's cry seems to fill the room, the room empty except for the grand piano, and the old chair from the cellar. Here she looked on the world for the last time with her physical eyes, looked at her husband's lifeless body, watched as the harmless looking jar was thrown in her face. Here, too, she had watched as her hopes her dreams died with her unborn child.

What you’ve just read above is a snatch from the synopsis of a terrifically told tale. A tale of tantalizing mystery, adventure and good old-fashioned gumshoe detective work.

Multi-genre author Phyllis Staton Campbell whom I’m privileged to call friend most assuredly out-did herself when she sat down and wrote this most magnificent book. Who Will Hear Them Cry is everything I said about it above and then some. Just to prove it here is my review.

In Who Will Hear Them Cry there is suspense to the tenth power times one-hundred. The mystery is such that I was not completely sure of who did what until it was quite literally revealed by the reading. The story is told in such vivid detail that I walked right along with each character as they went about their business of life each day. I felt their sadness and joy. Tasted the food they ate; smelled the coffee they drank; and shivered in the winter’s chill.

There were frightening times, heartbreaking tears, and laugh out loud moments filled with such roars of laughter that several times while reading my dog snorted in disgust from my having awakened him with my enjoyment.
The tender thread of love woven throughout the story gives this book a beautiful touch of romance.
